September 2022

The Mallorca International Art Award aspires to pay tribute to and to raise a greater international awareness of contemporary artistic creation in Mallorca.

The MIAA is directed at Mallorcan artists or artists with close ties with the island who stand out for the quality of their work and for their background in contemporary art.

The MIAA awards are a private initiative promoted by the Art Club 15 collective, the curator, Kaplan Projects gallery owner and cultural manager Mercedes Estarellas, and the company Apple Nowitzki, with the aim of setting up a collection of contemporary art from the beginning, as well as getting involved and enrich the culture of Mallorca locally and internationally.

The MIAA awards are a private initiative promoted by the businessman Paul Jörg Feldhoff, the curator, gallery owner at Kaplan Projects and cultural manager Mercedes Estarellas, and the company Appel Nowitzki, with the aim of setting up a collection of contemporary art from the beginning, in addition to get actively involved and enrich the culture of Mallorca at a local and international level.

The jury was made up of Enrique Juncosa (curator and art critic); Jule Kewenig (owner of the Kewenig Gallery); Fernando Gómez de la Cuesta (curator and art critic), Patricia Asbaek (owner of the Asbaek Gallery and the CCA Andratx), Julia Campbell Carter (international art consultant); Paul Jörg Feldhoff (entrepreneur at the company Feldhoff & Cie) and Mercedes Estarellas herself (Kaplan Projects).

The winners of this 2022 have been Marcelo Víquez, in the category of mid-career artists, and Alba Suau in the category of artists under 35 years of age. Both winners have obtained an economic award – €12,500 and €5,000 respectively – plus the possibility of exhibiting individually at the Museu de Mallorca and, later, at the Tor Art Space in Frankfurt. Marcelo Víquez’s individual exhibition receives the title “Sin título 2022 (Reconocimiento del vacío con la ayuda de cuatro estructuras de madera)”, while Alba Suau’s is entitled "Arròs melós".

On September 16, 2022, the awards ceremony was held at the Museu de Mallorca, in a private ceremony attended by 150 guests. BN Mallorca were in charge of the setting, while Santi Taura carried out the catering for the celebration.
